The WiFi chip simply does not work
    1 Star
The WiFi chip simply does not work
I would've rated this phone much higher if it didn't have this one major flaw. It has a nice screen, cameras, battery life, and so on. Its Bluetooth, however, is only 4.1 rather than 5, and 5 (which first appeared in the Galaxy S8 more than two years before the G9 Pro came out) has several times the power and range compared to previous versions. It's also not waterproof, no NFC, and doesn't work with CDMA networks. Minor shortcomings I can easily live with. I do wish it had a notification light so that I could see at a glance that something needs my attention without turning on the display - it has a flash for the rear camera, so technically that LED could be used for this purpose. But it isn't. The adaptive display brightness also plunges to its minimum setting in all but the brightest environments (e.g. outdoors), requiring a lot of manual intervention. But what really drives me up the wall is that the WiFi on this phone really doesn't work. The trouble happens on various networks, and the router I regularly use has nearly a dozen connected devices. This is the only one that doesn't work properly. Even a Kindle Fire 7 and a ZTE Maven, $40 devices from 2015, have a more stable connection. This phone, however, routinely has difficulty in staying connected. It'll fall back to cell data with a "?" or "x" overlaid on the WiFi icon, which can mean any status including "connected," "connected - no internet," "saved," "disabled," "authentication problem"... At which point it'll default to cell data - if I'm lucky. Usually it just gives up at connecting to the internet. And even when it's apparently stable, there are massive delays in fetching any file or data within any app. Turning off WiFi and using cell data, things load instantly. And yes, I've tried turning it off and on, forgetting and reentering the network, and so on, all to no avail. Sometimes it's fine for weeks, some days it just can't stay connected for more than a few seconds at a time. I've taken screen recordings (which are very high quality and show no visible compression - you can of course compress them yourself later if the large file size is a problem) of the WiFi settings screen, rotating through a variety of statuses and even turning itself off and back on. If I weren't trying to actually use the thing it would even be funny, but it's gotten to the point where I see "4G" instead of the WiFi symbol while at the grocery store and immediately think "not again!" before I remember that I'm not near a known network.I eventually managed to convince BLU support that there was a problem, and their rather abrupt solution was instructions on how to send the phone in for an RMA. Excuse me? No troubleshooting steps that a layperson might not think of? No network logging I can try? No replacement phone with instructions on how to mirror it so I don't have to start all over again with app data and settings? Just... send it in, for an indefinite amount of time, while there might not even be anyone available to work on it during this pandemic? I should just be without a phone for weeks/months? Yes, I could get another phone while this one's in the shop, but after the expense and hassle of switching phones, why in the world would I switch back after this one was returned to me?Oh, and it has 4GB of RAM but consumes 2GB of that simply idling with no apps running. Inactive apps are cached to a page file very aggressively, to the point that switching between just two or three apps is a hassle as the phone evicts an app from memory the moment it's not active even though there's 1.6GB RAM free, and switching back to something takes several seconds as it reopens the program. It should only do that when available RAM is low, or what's the point of having this much RAM?In conclusion, it has some good things going for it and dispenses with mostly niche features, but cuts corners on fundamentals. If you expect to use WiFi routinely, this may not be the phone for you.UPDATE 1/2021: I know I had some pretty harsh criticism of this phone's WiFi, but there's been a new development. Now the phone has trouble charging. :) At one point it got so bad that I could leave it plugged in for an hour and only see the gauge go up by 1%. Rebooting allows it to charge just fast enough that I don't think it'll inexorably plummet to empty and be unusable. But it still charges so slowly that it doesn't display "fast charge" anymore in circumstances where it should (battery at around 80% or below), around 1% per minute at best and getting progressively slower as it fills. That's an hour and a half to two hours for a full charge. And I baby that LiPo; I've only let it dip below 50% a couple times. I've tried two different AC/DC adapters, a 12V car charger, multiple different cables, and a wireless charger, which all used to work fine with this phone but no longer do. I wouldn't be surprised if this phone dies before the year is out. Also, I wrote this edit while charging the phone (went up 5% in half an hour) and watching the WiFi settings page like a TV show, as it turns itself off and on, shuffles through every variety of status message, stops seeing local networks, sees them again... It can't stay connected for more than a minute at a stretch. I thought of buying a USB-C to Ethernet adapter so it can at least have a stable connection while I'm at home, and then I remembered I have an OTG adapter and an old USB WiFi card. See attached photographic evidence that I tried it, and yes I would've used that if it worked. Unfortunately, no dice; it didn't even light up. Either not enough power or no driver. If anyone knows a USB WiFi adapter that will work on this phone, tell me in a comment - I don't care how it looks as long as it works.

The Blu G90 Pro phone works very well and is a steal at the price. Here are (a) positives, (b) negatives and (c) differences between this and the newer G91 phone with similar specs.

    (a) Positives
+ Lots of memory and storage
+ Separate slots for 2 SIM cards and 1 SD card all simultaneously
    + Android 10
    + Very high-resolution display 1080x2340
    + Long battery life
+ Rapid charger (but see negatives also)

    (b) Negatives
    - The bulky case which no doubt cost them more and is a positive for many but it makes the phone heavier and bulkier than it already is
    - Rapid charger is not the standard Qualcomm rapid charger and is somewhat slower than the Qualcomm system (but faster than a standard charge). The adaptor says 9V output (only), which suggests that it is not an adaptive 9V/5V "intelligent" charger. If this is true, you probably don't want to use the charger on anything else even though it looks like a standard USB charger as it may burn it out.

    (c) Differences from G91

They are more similar than different: Both have 2 SIM + 1 SD card slots, both have 128GB/4GB memory, both have 6.5" screen size and weight and thickness are very similar.

The G90 has the following that the G91 does not:
    + Rapid charging
+ 1080p resolution (G91 has 720p but would be hard to notice the difference)
+ Faster processor (I don't notice the difference but gamers might)
+ Heavy duty black case vs. slimmer silicone case (supposed to be a positive though I prefer the silicone)

Note that the Amazon listing for both G90 Pro and G91 say that they are "not compatible with new AT&T or Cricket activations," but it is not clear how true this is and what "new activation" means (is putting an existing SIM into a new phone a "new activation"?) All I know is that my existing account with AT&T worked just fine with my G90 Pro even though I had to replace the SIM card (I later ported my number to T-Mobile anyway, for unrelated reasons). The reason for this, which I tracked down, is that AT&T is phasing out their 3G network by 2022, so that they are no longer activating new service on phones that do not support Voice over 4G LTE (called VoLTE), which is how all voice will be carried on their network in the future. My G90 has a setting "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode (Recommended)" which I'm guessing is VoLTE. T-Mobile explicitly recognized the IMEI of the phone as being VoLTE-compatible but AT&T does not list any Blu phone in their "official" list of VoLTE-supported phones which, surprise surprise, focusses on phones that AT&T sells. So ... until we can get more clarity on this you may want to choose a GSM carrier other than AT&T or Cricket if you want to use Blu phones.

I destroyed my previous phone, a $800 "flagship" LGV40 in a pool accident (turns out "waterproof" isn't really waterproof) and bought this as a stopgap while I waited for the next line of flagship phones to drop.

I'll be waiting for a while, because this phone is super nice and compares nicely to flagship phones costing 3x or 4x as much.

RAM is 4GB and it's plenty and while I'm not sure what the CPU is, the phone is very speedy. The OS is really fast and even pretty intense games run fine. I have the 128GB version so that's nice and you can put in a mciro SD card if you need more space.

It's basically stock android and I did miss and need to d/l replacements for a few apps that LG includes -- I got a new gallery app and a notes app that syncs with google.

Battery life is fantastic so far. I don't usually charge overnight, just in the car to and from work (about 30 minutes each way) and I've found no issues.

Camera is really solid -- maybe not quite up to the LG V 20, but better than the V 40. It's not as good as a top Pixel or iPhone, but the 16 MP lens is surprisingly good. The only issue I've had is there's no way to manually focus the camera which means when trying to take a picture of something small and close (like a spider in a web), it can be hard to keep the phone from focusing on the wrong thing (like a leaf). This is a minor quibble. I like a good camera and I am really pleasantly surprised here, especially as some of the older Blu phones struggled here. There are 3 lenses, but one is for night shots (works very well) and one is a simple 5MP lens for portrait mode.

I got the blue version and I really like the shiny, oceany aesthetic (my wife thinks the charging cable looks like a minnow -- it's shiny silver). I realize this may not be eveyone's cup of tea.

Screen is 720 x 15??. I mean, it's an HD screen that's six inches diagonal, it looks great. iOS phones and top Androids have higher resolution, but I'm not sure what for, My wife has an XR and I feel this basically looks as good.

I guess the phone doesn't have NFC for tap-to-pay and I'm not sure if it supports wireless charging. I don't do either of those things so not an issue for me.

What it does have is a 3.5mm headphone jack which is awesome. I have Blutooth headphones, but I like the option to go old-school when needed.

It came with all the expected Blu extras -- a case, a screen protector (you need to install it yourself), headphones, and a charger. The case is fine, but it's not an otterbox. I didn't put on the screen protector because it has gorilla glass, but I probably will eventually.

Overall I have fallen in love with this phone. I expected it to be good, but now I'm planning to keep it until it dies. Really a great job by Blu on this one.
